Phil Mickelson, nicknamed Lefty for his southpaw swing, is a giant in professional golf. Mickelson has amassed more than three decades of experience as one of the game’s great players.

Mickelson was born in Phoenix, Arizona in 1970. Encouraged by his parents Phil and Mary Mickelson, he honed his skills at local courses. His talent was obvious – he won the Arizona State Amateur Championship three times in high school.

Mickelson went on to play golf for Arizona State University. He won three NCAA Individual Championships collegiately – something very few golfers have done. This first success presaged a professional career.

Mickelson turned professional in 1992 and became a major force. It was also his first PGA Tour win on his home course at the 1993 Phoenix Open. Over the 1990s – early 2000s, Mickelson was known to be aggressive, a great short player and a birdie machine.

Mickelson recorded 45 PGA Tour wins but never did reach the Majors – golf’s most prestigious tournaments. In 2004 he turned pro at the Masters Tournament. “Lefty” would later go on to win five more Majors: PGA Championship (2005), the British Open (2013) and three unbeaten weeks at the U.S. Open (2004, 2006, 2013). His longevity is equally remarkable: Mickelson became the oldest golfer to win a Major at the 2021 PGA Championship at age 50.

Mickelson has an influence beyond the fairways. He has built a business empire off endorsements, course design and his own golf equipment line. His net worth is now over USD 400 million, making him one of the highest earning golfers of all time.

Phil Mickelson, however, has not been without some controversies in his career. He joined the 2022 LIV Golf Invitational Series, a breakaway league backed by Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund. This caused a split in professional golf and Mickelson was slammed for joining a league with questionable ties.

Mickelson is a family man. He married Amy Mickelson in 1996 and has three children. Even with a demanding professional career, Phil still finds time for his family. He’s also spoken openly about his gambling addiction.

The story of Phil Mickelson is one of exceptional talent, unwavering determination and a dash of controversy. As he considers retirement, his legacy as a golfing icon is secure. Whether he plays or writes a new chapter, Phil Mickelson will be remembered for generations to come.
